4 Barriers to Running Effective Instagram and Facebook Ads
By now, you know that online advertising is an essential part of an effective outreach strategy. If not, you should go back and check out the first post in this series.
In that post, we learned that 96% of the unchurched say they would be likely to attend church if someone simply invited them. And we learned that 75% of those people are active on Facebook and Instagram.
That means that social networks like Facebook and Instagram are the single greatest outreach opportunity that is available to your church. The potential for reaching people with the gospel is incredible.
But this is not new information.
So why are so few churches taking advantage of this opportunity?
Why aren’t more churches having success with Facebook and Instagram ads?
Well, there are 4 massive barriers that keep churches from running effective online ads. And we’re going to give them to you right now. Then, we’re going to tell you how your church can get past them.
Let’s look at the first (and most obvious) barrier.
Running Facebook and Instagram ads is complicated. If you’ve tried this before, you know that it’s really difficult to use Facebook Ads Manager, and it’s even harder to understand Facebook Pixels.
And if you have no idea what those things are, don’t worry. You’re not missing out on anything fun.
On top of that, it’s difficult to figure out whether or not your ad is getting the results that it should.
There’s a lot that goes into even one Facebook ad:
- You need good ad copy that will connect with your audience and get them to stop scrolling.
- You need an image or video that will get their attention.
- You need a well-designed landing page that will convert people who click on your ad.
- And you need to measure results to be sure that your ad is actually working.
And that’s just for one ad campaign. Each of those steps needs to be repeated for every new ad that you run.
This leads right into the second barrier for churches.
Since running Facebook ads is so complex, many people look into a Facebook Ads training course.
But now you’re looking at another 5 hours a week just to learn the necessary skills and apply them to your online advertising.
By the time you write ad copy, create a landing page, setup your ad account, and start running ads, you’ve spent hours of your valuable time.
And that doesn’t even include that time that you’ll need to invest to check the metrics and stats to make sure your ad is converting.
Let’s zoom out for a minute. In Acts 6, the early church called upon servants in the church to step in so that the pastors could dedicate their time and energy to God’s Word and to prayer.
So let’s ask the obvious question:
- Were you called to marketing or ministry?
- Did you sign up for ministry to learn FB ads or to preach the gospel and see lives transformed?
I think you know the answer already.
Let’s look at the next barrier to running effective Facebook ads.
We’ve already talked about the cost of investing in training to understand and run online ads, but it can be even more expensive to hire someone else to do it for you.
It can cost hundreds (even thousands) of dollars per month to hire an agency to run your Facebook ads.
And many ad managers increase their fees when you increase your Facebook ad spend. So those costs can go up over time.
Let’s look at the last barrier that churches face when they try to run Facebook ads:
Because of how complex Facebook and Instagram can be, and the amount of time it takes to learn about online outreach, many in ministry have had bad experiences with their church’s paid advertising.
They’ve spent a lot of money on ads that did not get engagement.
This is why many pastors and churches give up on the idea of online advertising. They don’t have the time to figure out how to advertise effectively, and they don’t have the money to invest in something that isn’t working.
So let’s review:
- If you try to guess how to run facebook ads, you’re going to be confused and probably overwhelmed.
- If you try to learn facebook ads, you’re going to spend hours on a computer and not on ministering to your church.
- If you try to hire someone from the outside to run ads, it’s going to cost you a lot of money.
- And if you try to cut corners to get your ad up and running, you’re not going to get the results that you want.
Those are the barriers to running effective online ads. Now, let’s look at one solution that can help your church get past all of them.
At ProChurch, we want to help churches reach more people. We understand that you’re busy and already wear too many hats. We understand that you don’t have the time or money to become an advertising expert.
But what if you could get proven Facebook Ads, tailored specifically for churches, without becoming a Marketing Guru?
No hours away from ministry.
No hiring process.
We’ve helped churches all across the nation get visitors to their church for the first time, and we’ve used that experience to create an automatic digital outreach service that will give you everything you need to launch a simple, effective outreach strategy for your church.
It’s called ProChurch 365.
The goal with ProChurch 365 is simple. We want to help you reach people every day of the year. We want to help you find the people in your community who need Jesus.
So what do you get with ProChurch 365?
This is proven ad content that you can customize for your church. This is ad content that’s going to save time and increase engagement.
Most churches will run an “Everyday Invite” or “General Invite” ad year-round, but you can also create event specific ads for Easter, Christmas, and other church events on your calendar.
For each of these ad campaigns, you’ll also get custom landing pages designed to help potential visitors plan a visit to your church or event.
When someone plans a visit to your church, you have the option to automatically send their info to your church management system. With integrations like Planning Center, Mailchimp, Elevanto, and Zapier you can connect to the apps you already use and love.
From your dashboard, you’ll be able to see how many people view your ad, how many click through to your landing page, and how many plan a visit using the simple online form. In seconds, you’ll get a snapshot view of how your ads are converting each week.
You’ll have someone dedicated to helping you run the ads for your church. If you want, you can even schedule a strategy call with your ad expert.

When we first were helping churches run ads it would take them 3-6 hours to copy all the content, make a landing page, copy and paste the code… it took forever.
Since we’ve made the Ad Creation process so simple, it takes 10-15 minutes to get your ad up and running.
Since we’ve streamlined the process of online outreach and we’ve helped thousands of new visitors come to church, we can offer this system at an insanely low cost. It’s much more affordable and more efficient than hiring a full-time marketer.

During the launch, you can lock in your membership at 50% off!
So you can get a complete digital outreach package for $582 for the year!
